Welcome to the Site!

My name is Master William Clato-Day. I am a certified fifth degree black belt in Taekwondo. My certification is through the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) based in Seoul, Korea.

Since 2004, I have been offering quality and affordable martial arts instruction to children starting at age 5, teens, and adults, at Garmany Hall, in the Winding Trails Inc., recreation facility, off Route 4, in Farmington, Connecticut.

I have trained students from the following Greater Hartford and Farmington Valley towns: Farmington, Hartford, West Hartford, Canton, Simsbury, West Simsbury, Avon, Burlington, Torrington, Unionville, Middletown, New Britain, Bristol and Southington.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art of self-defense. You may be more familiar with the name Karate, which is a Japanese martial art. Taekwondo is different in that it has a lot more kicking than karate, which has more hand techniques. Taekwondo is the most popular and practiced martial art worldwide by people of all ages.

I teach the South Korean olympic style of Taekwondo as taught to me by my instructor, 9th Dan, Grandmaster, Moo Yong Lee. I conduct classes all year, on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings. My memberships are ongoing for a twelve-month period; or members may take lessons seasonally for the spring and/or fall.

A typical class includes warm up exercises, basic kicking and blocking, jump rope, and self-defense techniques or light contact controlled free sparring. Through diligent practice students will develop physical fitness, learn self-defense, self-confidence and self-control. We train hard but have fun too!

If you are interested in joining please stop by to visit the school. Or you can email me at info@clatodaystaekwondo.com or call me at 860-930-9098 to schedule two free introductory classes.

I hope to train you soon!

What is Taekwondo?

TaekwondoTaekwondo is a modern martial art, characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks. There are multiple interpretations of the name Taekwondo. Taekwondo is often translated as 'the way of hand and foot.'

Tae = 'Foot' or 'to kick' or 'to jump'
K'won = 'Fist' or 'to strike or block with hand'
Do = 'The way of' or 'art'

Put this together and Taekwondo means: "The art of kicking and punching" or "The art of unarmed combat."

Disciplines of Taekwondo

Taekwondo has four disciplines:
  • Patterns
  • Sparring
  • Self-defense
  • Break Test
It is the combination of these four disciplines that make the art of Taekwondo.

Objectives of Taekwondo:

  1. to develop an appreciation for Taekwondo as a sport and an art
  2. to achieve physical fitness through positive participation
  3. to improve mental discipline and emotional equanimity
  4. to learn self-defense skills
  5. to develop a sense of responsibility for one self and others
Taekwondo is primarily a kicking art, often with a greater emphasis on the sport aspect of the art. Taekwondo stylists tend to fight at an extended range, and keep opponents away with their feet. It is a hard/soft, external, fairly linear style and is known for being very powerful. There is a lot of competition work in many dojongs. Training tends to emphasize sparring, but has forms, and the basics are important as well.
