Welcome to the Site!

My name is William Clato-Day. Since 2004, I have been offering quality martial arts lessons to children and adults at Garmany Hall, in the Winding Trails Inc., Recreation facility, in Farmington, Connecticut.

I have trained students from the following towns: Farmington, Hartford, West Hartford, Simsbury, West Simsbury, Avon, Burlington and Unionville.

I teach Tae Kwon Do, which is a Korean martial art of self-defense. You may be more familiar with Karate, which is a Japanese martial art. The Taekwondo style does more kicking versus karate, which has more hand techniques. I am a certified 4th degree black belt in Taekwondo. My certification is through the World Taekwondo Federation based in Seoul, Korea.

I conduct classes all year, on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings. My memberships are ongoing for a twelve-month period; or like a soccer program, members may enroll seasonally for the spring and/or fall.

A typical class includes warm up exercises, basic kicking and blocking, jump rope, and self-defense techniques or light contact controlled free sparring. Through diligent practice students will develop physical fitness, learn self-defense, self-confidence and self-control. We train hard but have fun too!

Please stop by to visit the school if you are in the area or call 860-930-9098 to schedule two free introductory classes.

I hope to train you soon!

See below for more information on Tae Kwon Do and enjoy the rest of the site.

Thanks for visiting.

What is Taekwondo?

TaekwondoTaekwondo is a modern martial art, characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks. There are multiple interpretations of the name Taekwondo. Taekwondo is often translated as 'the way of hand and foot.'

Tae = 'Foot' or 'to kick' or 'to jump'
K'won = 'Fist' or 'to strike or block with hand'
Do = 'The way of' or 'art'

Put this together and Taekwondo means: "The art of kicking and punching" or "The art of unarmed combat."

Disciplines of Taekwondo

Taekwondo has four disciplines:
  • Patterns
  • Sparring
  • Self-defense
  • Break Test
It is the combination of these four disciplines that make the art of Taekwondo.

Objectives of Taekwondo:

  1. to develop an appreciation for Taekwondo as a sport and an art
  2. to achieve physical fitness through positive participation
  3. to improve mental discipline and emotional equanimity
  4. to learn self-defense skills
  5. to develop a sense of responsibility for one self and others
Taekwondo is primarily a kicking art, often with a greater emphasis on the sport aspect of the art. Taekwondo stylists tend to fight at an extended range, and keep opponents away with their feet. It is a hard/soft, external, fairly linear style and is known for being very powerful. There is a lot of competition work in many dojongs. Training tends to emphasize sparring, but has forms, and the basics are important as well.
